IKEA’s 2017 art event is here today and gone tomorrow—a marketing turn-of-phrase pulled directly from the press release and meant to leave your boho heart breathless. Why? Because the event is in-store only.

That means not available online or by phone, as the website clearly states.

What IS that about IKEA? All the best stuff (best = new) is ALWAYS in-store only.

We Are One by Hell’o (Jérôme Maynen and Antoine Detaille) / IKEA

It’s like they WANT to bolster the crumbling idea of brick-and-mortar and force aging boho mamas with bad knees to limp their labyrinthine aisles in AGONY, hoping to happen upon an unoccupied display chair in which to collapse.

Is there oxygen available, too? And referees in case we are legion?

Of course, this aging boho mama with bad knees has to make a two-hour journey in a cramped car FIRST to reach the closest store, THEN stay the merchandising path until she finds the accessible art she came for.

I scream agony (and SCREAM in general) because IKEA has been highly criticized for not making motorized carts available to mobility challenged shoppers, yet they've done nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch. ZERO.

I want them to hear MY cry of solidarity all the way across the pond at HQ.

This is America, after all, where life, liberty and market accessibility (which = the pursuit of happiness) are unalienable rights! If they want to sell here, let it be by our rules (MY rules even). Am I right?

They DO have wheelchairs available, which means have bulging biceps or bring a shopping buddy who’s willing and able to push. It sounds a bit like running a gauntlet, given the puzzle palace layout of each IKEA store.

No wonder this a customer added this “relationship saving station” at a California store. Here’s to hoping it becomes a permanent fixture when IKEA opens in Indianapolis later this year.

But by then, all that limited-edition, affordable art will be history and showing up on ebay at not-so-affordable prices.

Enough of my complaining, let’s get to the art of the matter:

• Each is 16-by-35 inches and printed on high-quality, textured paper.
• Each is available for $9.99, if you can get to and through the store in time. (Just sayin')

Got Mail #6 / Boho must-haves from Anthro spring collection

I know I’m guaranteed some boho home décor beauty when the seasons start to change and Anthropologie rolls out its new collection. Take it from me, this year’s spring home-decor offerings are a breath of boho fresh air.

I also know the door’s open in this photo, but let’s stay inside a bit and look around. After all, that’s what a lookbook’s for, and this one will have you ogling, drooling and spending before you know what’s hit you.

Comfort for living

I can’t begin to identify every new piece in each photo, but I’ll try to hit the highlights.

My absolute fave in this photo is that wild and crazy chair—the Medina-Printed Rivona Chair. The Medina print reappears in other new pieces. The inspiration for the fabric is Moroccan, but the chair is all midcentury modern. Love those legs!

Told you you'd see it reinterpreted on other pieces. Meet the Medina-Printed Tassa Sectional. It’s low-slung and pillowy, and if you fall asleep on it you’re liable to wake up in One Thousand and One Nights. Scheherazade never had it sooooooo good.

Here’s another view of the Tassa, paired up with the equally transporting Moroccan Wedding Ottoman. It functions as a coffee-table ottoman OR a bench for extra seating. I’m just wondering why it took someone so long to turn the ubiquitous Moroccan wedding blanket into multifunctional furniture.

Love those slender golden legs! I think I have legs on the brain, if that's anatomically possible...??

Here are some other beauties that caught my eye (clockwise from top left):

• The Floret Occasional Chair (you caught a glimpse of it in purple earlier but it also comes in green) features cotton velvet upholstery on a rosewood frame. What more could you ask for? 
• The Moussem Ceramic Stool, designed by Tracy Boyd, made of glazed white clay. It wants to cuddle up to a chair in my living room, but it would also work on a patio.
• The Zaylie Chair is inspired by Suzani applique and embroidery and sports embellishment all the way around, so be sure to place it where it can be viewed from a variety of angles. 
• The Kezia Occasional Chair is upholstered in your choice of three printed velvets. ‘Nuf said, right? 
• The Tanja Trunk makes a terrific coffee table or end-of-bed accent with its natural wood, incised eight-point stars and antique-iron accents. 
• This collection of Sketched Safari Chairs, by fashion designer Edward Hall, is the perfect anchor for any global-inspired home. So many shapes, sizes, animal prints and colors! Begin your safari hanging out with the elephants on the Purple Holloway Chair and the Canary-colored Tillie, then run with the big cats in the Indigo Bixby and the bright Orange Tillie. The collection also includes a flamingo-printed chair, as well as elephant wallpaper and a tiger lampshade, but I’ll let you hunt those down on your own.

Nothing tells a sweeter story, gathered ‘round a table, than Anthro’s Folkthread Chairs, reinterpreted this season in recycled silk in three colors to mix and match. I’m also in love with the plushy Kinza Rug beneath. It’s shown in ivory but also comes in a black-and-white version.

And what would any gathering be without romantic, mood-setting lighting? I’m loving (left to right): the Abalorio Chandelier, the Nomad Pendant, and the Beadcraft Chandelier.

The Premium Leather Rhys Bed comes in 13 colors and four sizes. Here it’s dressed in one of my favorite new duvet sets, the Kessabine, shown in slate but also available in orange. I love the embroidery, pompons and fringe against soft cotton, don’t you?

The striking Geo Brass Inlay bedroom furniture collection includes this platform bed with massive headboard in tropical hardwood, inlaid with brass, and the diminutive nightstand shown. There’s also a three-drawer chest of drawers to complete the sweet suite.

The Prana Bedroom Collection showcases the natural beauty of multi-hued, live-edge oak and includes the bed, nightstand and six-drawer chest shown. And there’s that Moroccan Wedding Ottoman again, this time at the bed’s foot. All items are sold separately.

If this rooms isn’t glamorous boho—glambo—I'll eat my pompons. The Velvet Ainesworth Bed comes in 18 colors and two sizes, each and every one fit for a princess, a diva, a super-model, or glamorous, boho you. The Velvet Edilyn Bench comes in all the same colors so you can have a custom match as well as a comfy seat to take your shoes on and off.

Some of my favorite new Anthro bedding includes (clockwise from top left) :

• The Kerry Cassill Persica Quilt and shams, which call to mind lovely, gently worn bedding you might find in the Paris Flea Market. Here it’s paired with the Lulie Wallace Cascabel Sheet Set. I can almost smell peaches, can’t you? 
• The Woven Sunset Duvet and shams is by LA’s All Roads Design and features standard, king and euro sham options. I love its happy pinks, and, of course, I adore anything that comes out of the All Roads’ workshop. 
• I don’t often point out cute kid's stuff (unless I want it for my adult self!), but the Wilderness Map collection of toddler and infant bedding is an exception. It’s perfect for your little cowboy or trailblazer or bronc-buster. Check out the buffalo! I bet there’s an antelope in there somewhere too. 
• Ditto for the Cat Collective collection. Wish I had a young child so I could decorate with that, right down to the cute little bereted cat pillow. Turn him over and check out his stuffed tail! 

Weave me some happiness

Nobody does textiles better than Anthropologie, and they’ve really outdone themselves this spring. There’s a vast array of new colorful throws, rugs and pillows….

...as well as designs in black, white and other neutrals. I just adore the detail and the workmanship in these pieces. I could look all day and touch all night if they’d only lock me in the store! (I keep trying!)

My favorite rugs will probably be sold out by the time this post appears. From left to right, my penultimate picks include the very boho Versify Rug with its all-over tassels, the William Morris-inspired Wyla Rug done in crewel embroidery, and the Embroidered Tiger Rug, available in either orange or teal.

Anthropologie’s unique, handcrafted rugs do often sell out quickly, particularly in the smaller, less pricier sizes. If, like me, you have wall-to-wall carpet and no good space for an area rug (and your budget doesn’t allow a bigger size) get the one you like in a 3-by-5 and hang it on the wall as art. But get it quick, before it’s gone, K?

I’m really into the look of a handcrafted throw at the foot of my bed since I redid my bedding with one of Anthropologie's throws. But now they have plenty of new choices for me to drool over. Clockwise from top left, meet my spring collection picks:

• The Tufted Desert Throw, the latest from All Roads Design, which simply SINGS summer sunset. 
• The Centrale Throw Blanket, which I simply MUST have for my living room. 
• The Woven Poms Throw in mind-bending boho coral. 
• The Textured Indira Throw in a cadre of neutrals. 
• The rug-like Aldalora Throw in either neutral or blue. 
• The Tufted Yoursa Throw with its sweet patchwork of soft stripes, outlined in poms.

New Missoni home decor line is for boho kids of all ages

Excuse my saying so, but Margherita Missoni’s new Pottery Barn Kids line is too fun and too boho to limit to just children’s spaces. If you have young children or are expecting, then by all means, shop this line.

But if, like me, you’re beyond child-bearing and/or child-rearing, don’t be sad: There’s lots in this line to appeal to the mature set who haven’t lost their eye for color and fun.

Now here’s a rundown of what in the collection, in my opinion, works for all of us grown-ups...

A tisket, a tasket

My laundry room is directly off my kitchen, and I keep a laundry bag hanging on the back of the door in between for stashing used kitchen towels and cloth napkins. Mine is plain old off-white canvas, so one of Margherita's Laundry Bags ($59) would be a welcome upgrade. I’ll take the green tiger, please. Why, of course, I picked the cat!

And these baskets are all dreamy. My own personal favorites are the Diamond baskets in the top photo, but I wouldn’t refuse either the Blue or Pink Hombre baskets. The larger sizes ($69) would make terrific wastebaskets, and the smaller ones ($39) could hold books, a sewing project, magazines, a stack of throws to ward off the chill, or extra throw pillows.

These fun-shaped basket pendants ($199) are also terrific for any age. I love the odd shapes of each one, both of which remind me of hats! I can see the Yellow Pendant Basket hanging singly or grouped over a kitchen island or bathroom vanity. And the diamond-patterned, Black Pendant Basket would be just the ticket hung low over a casual dining or game table.

Yipes! Stripes! A Missoni tradition

Colorful stripes—and zigzags, in particular—have long been the stuff of Missoni design, whether in fashion or home interiors.

So this Pop Color Stripes Rug has a long string of forbears, as well as a myriad of adult uses in the modern home, with sizes ranging from 3-by-5 feet to 8-by-10 feet ($149-$699).

Ya' gotta admit, it looks pretty snazzy beneath the Dripped Side Table ($89), which is itself a jazzy add-on in any adult-frequented room.

It pairs equally well with the Linen Patchwork Baby Bedding ($24-$129) and Quilted Bedding (available in twin and full/queen, $34-$209), both from the collection.

I’m also digging that cute Animal Canopy ($149) above the twin beds, but I haven’t figured out a way to make it work for eligible-for-AARP me. Now if I had grandkids…

And the Yellow Daisy Mirror ($199) would be stunning in a powder bath or entry hall as a fun and cheery accent. Who among us wouldn’t like to see how they look as a flower at least once in their lifetime?

I, for one, would even enjoy plopping down on that Daisy Pouf ($99), provided there’s someone around to help me get back up.

No, the chest isn’t part of the collection, but the set of six colorful knobs ($49) is and would add a delightful touch to painted or stained furniture or cabinets.

Or try the set of four colorful hooks ($49) to jazz up a laundry room, bath or hallway. It’s important, IMHO, to make every room in the house function with fun in mind.

The Modern Mobile ($59) will work in just about any space, in addition to over a baby’s crib, and would look particularly fetching refracting the rays spilling through a sunny window.

The Stars and Stripes Garlands ($19 each) would add extra pizzazz to any self-respecting, kid-at-heart adult’s office, don’t you think? I can just see the stripey one decking out my very own mood board.

Okay, I admit, if you don't have kids you’ll have hard time explaining the Jumbo Turtle Pouf ($119). But if you don’t tell on me, I won’t tell on you, K?

The collection also includes a number of sweet and quirky pillows. I especially love the Embroidered Beetle Pillow ($24.50, right behind “Frog Lover”) and think it would be a great addition to a sunporch.

And these Embroidered Pouches ($49, $39 and $36, front to back)) are clearly not for your home, nor are they for kids, but I’m thinking they’d look extra special inside my purse or suitcase! I’m partial to the medium-size one, whose sentiment translates, Hands Off!

Got Mail #4 / Annie Selke is all about pattern & textile

Color, comfort, and approachable elegance that bring happiness to your home—these are the hallmarks of designer Annie Selke, whose career began in textile design and has run the gamut from fashion to home interiors to entrepreneur.

A consummate traveler and flea-market treasure hunter, Selke gathers inspiration wherever she goes and distills her ideas into a variety of fabulous and functional products for the home and for the person. Her brands include Pine Cone Hill, Dash & Albert, Luxe, Fresh American, and Annie Selke Outlet.

Though much of what she offers is out of my price range, I still love looking, and I think you will too. I couldn’t have been more revved than when her latest catalog showed up in my mailbox and I began to immerse myself in Annie Selke color and pattern. I’ve picked out a few favorites, but there’s GOBS more to see on her website. In most of the photos included here, EVERYTHING in the photo is part of her collection, but I’ll only be including descriptions of and links to the items I’m swooning over.

Speaking of swooning, pillows are my go-to item, and Selke has loads of beauties.

The pillows on this sofa all hail from the Pine Cone Hill Bright Bohemian Collection (small wonder they caught my eye!) and are made in India in a fair-trade arrangement with skilled artisans. They are the faves of all my favorites!! Check them all out, left to right:

• The Jamboree Embroidered Pillow sports lots and lots of brilliant handmade tassels, hand-embroidered swirls and fringe in a wool blend. It measures 16-by-20 inches and sells for $152. 
• Next up is the Swirl Embroidered Decorative Pillow, done in a style reminiscent of kantha quilts. The 18-inch square cotton sells for $134. 
• The Boho Embroidered Pillow, true to its name, is a colorful riot of handcraftsmanship, pattern play, and exquisite embellishment on a patterned base of hand-screened houndstooth. The “double boudoir” size measures 15-by-35 inches, and it sells for $264. 
• The Geodesic Embroidered Pillow is embroidered all over in an intricate geometric pattern that mixes neon ribbons and yarns for an almost three-dimensional effect. The pillow is 100-percent cotton with acrylic embroidery, measures 22-inches square, and sells for $222.

A Peruvian textile served as the inspiration for the splashy linen Lima Grey Decorative Pillow. It features hand-embroidery in soft acrylic with a cotton back, measures 20-inches square, and sells for $202. I love how the embroidery pops against the gray linen background.

The Amelie Embroidered Pillows are an exuberant, tactile update on paisley. They can be ordered in either 20-inches square or 15-by-20-inches at $162 and $208, respectively.

The Veva Decorative Pillow (front) features playful circular cotton appliques on a grid-patterned linen base, embellished with acrylic embroidery—all in the refined palette of fuchsia, gold, sage, sky, and burnt orange. The pillow can be ordered in either 20-inches square for $152 or double boudoir for $206. Behind Veva is the coordinating Borla Decorative Pillow, which starts with the same linen base then adds festive tassels in shades of turquoise, gold, fuchsia, and burnt orange for a fresh, fun vibe. The 22-inch square pillow sells for $168.

An antique document served as inspiration for the exquisitely detailed Poppy Pink Decorative Pillow. It features vibrant pink folded petal-pleat appliques accented by elegant embroidery, delicate beading, and dressmaker details in a linen/cotton blend. At 22-inches square, it sells for $186, and also comes in blue.

The colorful, African-inspired embroidery of the Kenya Embroidered Decorative Pillow will bring a touch of savannah style to your bed or sitting area. The eclectic embroidery tops a cotton/linen base in desert shades of clay, sand, and sky, making this pillow another bohemian dream. It comes in 20-inches square for $162 or 15-by-35 inches for $236.

Behind it you’ll spy the Anatolia Linen Decorative Pillow, inspired by patterns found in oriental rugs and embellished with soft fringe on all four sides. Crafted of 100-percent linen, this pillow makes fast friends with both neutrals and deep earth tones. It comes in two sizes: 20-inches square and 22-by-40 inches, for $92 and $164, respectively.

Another item from the Bright Bohemian Collection—the Kartika Embroidered Bed Scarf—also caught my eye. A bedscarf is just a simple way to add that final layer of luxury to your bed without all the bulk of a throw or additional quilt. At 44-by-100 inches, it works with most any size bed (kings are 76 inches wide) or folds over the back of a sofa for an instant pop of color. Kartika features a soft, hand-quilted cotton base embroidered with neon acrylic yarns. Handmade tassels on the two shorter ends complete the free-spirited effect. The bedscarf retails for $444.

The Kartika design is also available in fashion for your table. Instead of tassels, the Stone-Washed Linen Shale Embroidered Table Runner sports colorful fringe. It measures 16-inches wide by 84-inches long, sells for $198 and also comes in green. Choose coordinating Stone-Washed Linen Embroidered Napkins in shale with magenta embroidery or green with turquoise embroidery to mix and match with either color of runner or double as dresser, side table and nightstand toppers. A set of four napkins is priced at $200.

Not all the items in this Christmas collection are still available, but I had to show the photo to you anyway because everything is so colorful and boho. And maybe they will even give the crafty among you some ideas for stellar knock-offs for holiday season 2017. Maybe I will even try them myself!

What IS still available now is the Multicolor Jubilee Felt Stocking for $40 and the Fabulous Felt Flowers Set of 20 for $210. That latter price, especially, should motivate you to DIY! For the stockings, strips of wool felt are sewn together, then accented along the outer edges with dark fuchsia whip-stitching. They measure 10-inches wide by 15-inches long and have a solid red back and hanging loop. The flowers range in size from 2.75 to 4 inches in diameter and can be used for package decorations, ornaments, jewelry, table decorations, combined in a garland or wreath, or used in whatever way your bright and bohemian imagination can cook up.

Selke offers a wide variety of art, but this Floral Mosaic most appealed to my boho sensibilities. The abstract print features a riotous exploration of colors that suggest the play of light over a garden in full bloom. It’s perfect for neutral rooms where you want to add a punch of color, or brighter rooms where you want to let your boho maximal mama go all out. At $473, it measures 21-by-41 inches and can be hung horizontally or vertically. A similar piece, Garden Mosaic, features blue, green and orange tones, measures approximately 30-by-60 inches, and sells for $837.

How ‘bout we cut a rug next?

A post on Annie Selke brands wouldn’t be complete without a gander at a few of her famous Dash & Albert Rugs.

My hands-down favorite has to be the Cat’s Paw Grey Wool Micro-Hooked Rug. It’s not just the name—though, as you know, I love anything “cat”—but the pattern and color have captured my heart. I love the subtle neutral tones, reminiscent of my favorite feline—as well as the irregular print. It's almost an animal print, but more subtle. It reminds me of pebbles—very smooth ones, in the shallows of the fresh-water Finger Lakes I grew up around. “Micro-hooked” means smaller “mini” loops in a finer-gauge 100-percent wool yarn, which makes the rug flatter and perfect for high-traffic areas. It also requires little maintenance to assure long wear.

Another favorite of mine is the Follow the Arrows Cotton Yarn Hooked Rug. It’s hand-hooked with twisted yarns, which gives it a springy, cushier, looped construction. Each rug is also finished with a cotton canvas backing, attached with latex. Sizes range from 2-by-3 feet to 10-by-14 feet. Originally priced at $124-$2,798, this rug is now available in the outlet for $87-$1,959.

For Instance, these flat-weave tote patterns may be rugs, as well as pillows, throws, scarves, etc. Clockwise from upper left they are: Rainbow Stripe Woven Cotton Tote, $72; Wyatt Woven Cotton Tote Bag, $72; Gypsy Stripe Multi-Woven Cotton Tote, $86; and Stone Soup Woven Cotton Tote, $72. All are 19-by-16-3 inches, though other totes are available in different sizes and shapes.

Selke sells a bevy of beautiful scarves, many of which are currently outlet-priced. But it was these two that caught my boho eye: the Layla Embroidered Shawl (left) and the Maya Embroidered Shawl (right.) Both are wool with viscose machine embroidery and can be worn to keep your shoulders warm or as oversize scarves. They measure 27-by-70 inches and sell for $104.

Annie Selke’s plush robes come in a rainbow of solid colors, but my favorite is this striped beauty, the Selke Fleece Blossom Striped Robe, which is a rainbow unto itself. Made of machine washable polyester fleece, this robe features oversized patch pockets, a long tie belt, and is sized to hang mid-calf. It’s available in petite length and one-size-fits-most, both priced at $103.
